When to buy
Go for the Dualtron City if you’re after speed and range. Also, it is a well-built scooter with top-notch components which will last for years to come. With its 15 inch tires, you’re in for a very smooth riding experience, which may be its biggest selling point.
When not to buy
Think twice if you’re on a limited budget, as this is not exactly a cheap scooter. If you often need to carry your scooter, this is not the ideal choice for you, since it is not really portable.
This is a complete Dualtron City review, where we’ll dig into its performance and features and see why it is one of the most popular scooters Dualtron ever made.
Basics
Let’s go through the essential info you’ll need before hopping on your scooter.
Unboxing
The scooter arrived in a safely protected box, weighing around 92 Ibs / 42 kg.
The box contained:
- the scooter itself
- a charger
- set of tools
- the user manual.
Assembly
The Dualtron City arrived nearly ready for riding, I just needed to unfold the handlebars and adjust them to my height.
However, I’d advise inspecting the scooter for any potential loose screws. If you come across such a situation, simply tighten them, and you’ll be ready to hit the streets.
Folding and unfolding
The Dualtron City has a simple folding mechanism, so you can easily switch between riding and carrying it in just a few seconds.
To fold the scooter, unlock the folding latch located near the stem’s base, usually near the handlebar.
Lift or twist the latch as per the model’s design.
Next, lower the handlebar stem by pulling the release lever on the stem itself, applying initial pressure to overcome spring tension.
Align the fully lowered stem with the folding notch on the deck for a secure position.
Finally, close and secure the folding latch with a click to maintain the scooter’s compact and stable form during transport or storage.
Performance
Next, let’s see the Dualtron City’s performance in more detail.
Speed and speed tests
The official speed Dualtron City has is up to 45 mph / 72 kmh.
During my test rides, in normal riding conditions, the scooter achieved around 40 mph / 64 kmh – 42 mph / 67 kmh. The acceleration was great, with the dual motors kicking in and moving the scooter with impressive force.
But, if you’re a lover of the high speeds, I’m afraid this scooter may not be enough. You should check out my list for fastest electric scooters if this is not fast enough for you.
Motor
The Dualtron City comes packed with a 4000W BLDC Dual Hub Motor, providing an exhilarating and efficient ride for urban commuters.
Not only does this motor provide the scooter with great speed and range, but also offers exceptional torque for swift acceleration and seamless maneuverability.
Range and range tests
Officially, the Dualtron City reaches up to 55 mi / 90 km. However, keep in mind the weight, driving style and weather condition during your ride.
My test drive resulted in around 49 mi / 80 km on a single charge. I took the scooter on a few city rides, most of the roads were flat, but there were a few inclines with which the Dualtron City had no problem with.
In my opinion, this range will be more than enough for most people. But, if you’re planning on taking on longer distances, there are other scooters who would definitely suit you better – check out my list for best long-range electric scooters for other alternatives.
Climbing angle and climbing tests
The Dualtron City has an official climbing angle of 20°.
In my experience, this is a decent climbing angle for a city commuter scooter, assuming that you’ll ride in urban environments where you wouldn’t encounter steep inclines.
However, if you live in a hilly area and you regularly do, check out my list for best climbing electric scooters and choose something more suitable.
Waterproof and IP rating
The Dualtron City isn’t officially waterproof. So, it’s best to avoid riding it in the rain, as a general rule for electric scooters.
I’ve tried the scooter in the rain a few times without any issues, but I still recommend not using it in wet weather.
If you live in a place with a lot of rain, this scooter might not be the best choice. Check out my list of the best waterproof electric scooters to find a better option.
Battery and charging
The 60V 25Ah swappable battery is one of the strongest features of this scooter.
It can be easily detached from the body of the scooter with almost no effort. This gives you the option to buy additional batteries and use two of them, which brings one great benefit – you can use one while the other is charging, saving a lot of time, or simply extend the range of the scooter if you plan a longer trip.
The charging time is a bit longer – 14 hours with a standard charger, but just 7 hours with 2 standard chargers and 3+ hours with the quick charger.
Ride experience
The Dualtron City electric scooter is equipped with twin 1200W brushless motors, which means a combined peak power of 4000W. So, naturally the acceleration is insane – it got from 0 to 30 mph in just seconds!
During my ride, the scooter reached manageable speeds even in its slowest mode (eco mode).
Conquering inclines was effortless with the City’s potent motors and substantial torque. However, I must mention that I didn’t encounter very steep hills on my test drive so I’m not sure how well would the scooter perform in such conditions.
The standout feature of the City is its 15-inch pneumatic tires, the largest available on any Dualtron scooter. These colossal wheels absorbed every irregularity in the terrain, offered a silky-smooth ride, almost like with a regular bike.
The hydraulic suspension system further elevated the comfort level by absorbing even the harshest impacts.
Also, the City’s expansive deck provides ample room, which further enabled my stability.
The Dualtron City can cover distances of up to 45 mi / 72 km on a single charge – for me this is ideal for extensive urban adventures.
Dualtron City vs other scooters
Let’s see how the Dualtron City compares to it’s family predecessors.
Dualtron City vs Dualtron Ultra 2
The Dualtron Ultra 2 offers exceptional performance metrics, equipped with a formidable 6640W peak power output from its dual motors.
Accelerating swiftly and reaching speeds higher than the City, the Ultra 2 is certainly a better performer.
It has a powerful battery system that helps it achieve an impressive range, making it suitable for longer journeys.
Additionally, The Ultra 2 emphasizes a balance between power and endurance, featuring dual hydraulic brakes and advanced suspension for a smooth and controlled ride.
I’d recommend the Dualtron Ultra 2 if you can afford it actually, given the fact that for a slightly higher cost, you get a really powerful and well-equipped scooter offering superior performance and features compared to other options in this price range.
Dualtron City vs Dualtron Victor Luxury
The Dualtron Victory Luxury is a great scooter, offering a speed up to 42 mph / 69 kmh and range of 55 mi / 90 km.
On the other hand, the Dualtron City reaches slightly higher speed 50 mph / 82 kmh and a lower range of 54 mi / 88 km.
Both of these scooters have a 4000W dual motor, with the Dualtron Victor Luxury having a higher climbing angle of 23°.
The difference in their cost is only few hundred dollars, so I’d say that the Dualtron City is the clear winner here if the budget is not a problem for you.
Dualtron City vs Dualtron Achilleus
The Dualtron City, a comfort cruiser, with its 15-inch pneumatic tires effortlessly glides over potholes and curbs, offering spacious foot room that is ideal for extensive commutes and leisurely cruises.
In contrast, the Dualtron Achilleus, equipped with slightly smaller 13-inch pneumatic tires, prioritizes increased agility. It strikes a balance between comfort and nimbleness, making it a perfect choice for navigating tight city streets and traffic with finesse.
Despite its comfort-centric focus, the City conceals a powerful core. Dual 1200W motors move it to speeds of up to 49 mph / 80 kmh and a range up to 54 mi / 88 km . The Achilleus has a more powerful motor which makes it better for climbing steeper inclines, however the speed and range are similar.
This is a tough choice, but I’d say go for the Dualtron City if you’re after comfort, since the other features are quite similar.
Build quality
I found the overall build quality of the Dualtron City to be excellent, and only noticed a few minor issues.
The scooter’s durability is attributed to its use of premium materials such as aircraft-grade aluminum and forged steel, which ensures a long-lasting construction.
The well-welded frame and components give a sturdy feel, capable of enduring the daily challenges of regular use.
The Dualtron City is made of of high-end elements like LG batteries, hydraulic disc brakes, and high-performance tires that further enhance the scooter’s reliability and performance.
Notably, the hydraulic suspension system stands out for its strength and effective dampening, ensuring a smooth ride by efficiently absorbing bumps and impacts.
Despite its impressive capabilities, the handlebar height might be a concern for taller riders, as the handlebars might feel a bit low for someone under six feet tall.
Features
Next, let’s check out the Dualtron City’s unique features.
Tires and wheels
The Dualtron City electric scooter features substantial 15-inch pneumatic tires, which are the scooter’s trademark feature and crown jewel.
These sizable wheels have a crucial role in delivering an unparalleled riding experience.
With a diameter that dwarfs typical scooter tires, these 15-inch behemoths effortlessly conquer various terrains, absorbing bumps, cracks, and potholes along the way.
The pneumatic design adds an extra layer of cushioning, contributing to a smooth and comfortable ride. Their size not only enhances the scooter’s comfort, but also provides stability.
Brakes
The Dualtron City comes with 160 mm Zoom semi hydraulic discs, and they were one of my favorite features of this scooter.
This is one of the best braking systems on the market, it gave the scooter excellent stability and added to its secure build.
It also has an anti-lock brake system (ABS) that reduces tire skidding and locking up during braking, a feature often overlooked that many high-speed riders love.
Controller and display
This scooter has an EY3 display placed on the handlebars and a 60 V controller 30 A x 2 Power controller.
The buttons and switches control various features, including the power on/off button, turn signals, eco mode, and the horn button.
The ergonomic design and intuitive layout contribute to a user-friendly interface, allowing riders to navigate the scooter’s settings effortlessly.
The display was bright enough which was great, meaning you won’t have any problems with it on sunny days.
Suspension
This scooter comes with an adjustable rubber suspension to dampen movement and absorb shocks.
The combination of the suspension system together with its large wheels not only provides a very smooth ride, but also stability and comfort.
Lights
The scooter includes various LED lights, offering customizable colors and lighting effects.
Equipped with dual deck headlights, twin tail lights at the back, an extra light on the fender, and programmable LEDs adorning the stem, swingarms, deck sides, and rear fender, the Dualtron City makes the nighttime rides vibrant and safe. Riding the scooter at night was a blast!
Weight and portability
The Dualtron City comes a bit heavy, with a 41 kg / 91 lbs. Kind of reasonable, given the power it has.
However, this greatly reduces portability.
So, if you’re planning on traveling or transporting the scooter frequently, the Dualtron City may not be your ideal choice.
Take a look at some other alternatives from my list of the most lightweight electric scooters that would suit you better.
Weight capacity
The official weight capacity of the Dualtron City is 265 lbs / 120 kg.
If you need to carry some belongings, don’t worry, the Dualtron City can handle it with ease.
However, I expected a bigger weight capacity from this scooter, considering its weight and specs. So, if you need a bit more, take a look at my list for electric scooters for heavy adults which have a lot more weight capacity.
Accessories and customizations
First of all, since this is a very fast scooter, riding without a helmet would be insanity, so make sure to check out my guide on the best electric scooter helmets, and get a full-face helmet if you can, as anything less than that might be riskier.
The most important upgrade is a second battery. The removable battery feature offers a lot of possibilities and is a huge improvement over other, older models, but it’s almost worthless if you only use the one battery you get with the scooter.
This can also increase the scooter’s portability – you can lock the scooter outside or in your yard, and just bring in the battery inside for charging.
The Dualtron Storm is a somewhat pricey scooter, and if you invest in such a vehicle, you definitely want it to be as safe and secure as possible. So, a strong scooter lock is still a must-have. Related to this, check out my guide on the best scooter accessories for a few other extra addons that will make the scooter better (my favorite being the wall mount and the phone stand).
Additionally, you have the option of installing a seat on the Dualtron City. Here is a video guide for easier demonstration.
Tradeoffs and problems
The Dualtron City is really heavy. Like, really heavy. This makes it non-portable by hand and somewhat forces you to keep it someplace close to the ground floor.
Although it has big tires, it’s still not quite made for off-road terrain and can be damaged while riding on dirt tracks and rocky paths.
If you’re an off-road enthusiast, take a look at scooters which are specifically made for off-road riding.
Also, it’s not fully waterproof, and it can be somewhat damaged by exposure to water or other dangerous ingresses.
It is a little pricey and if you’re on a budget you can explore some other options under $2500, $1500 or $1000.
Another thing that bothered me is the height of the deck due to the big tires. I felt like hopping on and off constantly while waiting on traffic lights. Not a dealbreaker, but it can be a bit annoying if you’re used to regular scooters.
Finally, I think that the battery level decreases fast. During my test ride, I didn’t drive the scooter very far and the battery was almost half empty.
Verdict
With a powerful motor, offering great speed and range plus comfort, you’re in for a very thrilling and comfortable experience.
The scooter is quite heavy and not portable, but it also provides tons of power and great performance, so the weight is worth it.
Plus, the tires can easily overcome any road bumps.
Overall, if you’re willing to invest in a top-tier electric scooter for a premium riding experience, the Dualtron City is undoubtedly a great choice, and I’d definitely recommend it every time!
In fact, if you’re after a scooter with big tires, I don’t think there’s a better choice out there right now, so definitely consider this choice.
Have fun!
