When to buy
The Bluetran Lightning is an ideal choice for experienced riders who prioritize high performance, extended range, and a stylish design in an electric scooter. If you’re looking for a scooter that can cover substantial distances at a brisk pace, making it perfect for day-long exploration or commuting, the Bluetran Lightning is a great fit.
When not to buy
The Bluetran Lightning may not be the best choice for riders who are on a tight budget, as it comes with a premium price tag. Moreover, if you prioritize lightweight and highly portable scooters, the Bluetran Lightning’s weight might be a drawback. Also, if you live in a rainy area this is not a suitable choice for you – the scooter lacks an IP rating.
This is a complete Bluetran Lightning review – we’ll take a closer look at the Bluetran Lightning, exploring its design, performance, and features that make it stand out among the electric scooters.
Basics
Let’s cover some important details you should know before taking your scooter for a ride.
Unboxing
The scooter arrived in a box, neatly and safely packed
The box contained:
- the scooter itself
- a charger
- tool kit
- light controller
- user manual.
Assembly
The Bluetran Lightning comes almost ready for riding, with a few tweaks needed.
I just unfolded the handlebars and adjusted the stem to my height. Also, I had to install the horn.
However, I’d advise you to thoroughly inspect the scooter, see if there are any potential loose screws.
Performance
Next, let’s see how the Bluetran Lighting performs in more detail.
Speed and speed tests
Officially, the scooter offers a speed up to 47 mph / 75 kmh.
During my test ride, the Bluetran Lightning got up to 44 mph / 71 kmh on a flat terrain, in a normal weather condition.
In my opinion, this is a great speed, but if you’re a speed enthusiast you’re probably after something more. You can take a look at my list for fastest electric scooters and find something more suitable.
Motor
This scooter comes packed with robust 2500W dual motors, featuring one motor in the front and another in the rear.
This powerful motor setup enables the scooter to achieve high speeds and swift accelleration, providing a thrilling and efficient riding experience.
Range and range tests
The Bluetran Lightning electric scooter offers a commendable range of up to 93 mi / 150 km using the top-tier battery setup, with the most advanced configuration featuring the 72V35Ah LG battery.
This ample range makes it suitable for various urban commuting needs, allowing riders to cover significant distances on city roads and complete daily errands without the concern of running out of battery power.
Climbing angle and climbing tests
The Bluetran Lightning has an official climbing angle of 31°.
I was really impressed with the climbing capability this scooter offered. It easily conquered some very steep hills and it would be the perfect choice for you if you live in a hilly area.
Waterproof and IP rating
This scooter lacks an official IP rating, so it is not advisable to use it in rainy or wet conditions.
I did ride the Bluetran Lightning in light rain once, and I didn’t notice any damage.
However, if you live in a rainy area I’d advise you to check out some other scooters from my list for best waterproof electric scooters, just for precaution.
Battery and charging
The Bluetran Lightning offers three battery variants: 72V35Ah (LG MJ1 18650), 72V32Ah (LG MH1 18650) and 72V26Ah (CN 18650). You can choose how far you want to ride the scooter.
Accordingly, the charging time will be different for the batteries – (35Ah) 25 hours with standard charger, 7 hours with quick charger, (32Ah) 22 hours with standard charger, 6 hours with quick charger and (26Ah) 18 hours with standard charger, 5 hours with quick charger.
Also, this scooter comes with GX20-3P charging port that will provide faster charging.
Ride experience
I had a really good time riding the Bluetran Lightning, and I don’t say this lightly.
The scooter has great suspension, which provided me with a very smooth and comfortable ride. I felt good stability and balance thanks to its stiff stem and wide handlebars.
The Bluetran Lightning offers a great range so I didn’t worry even once about the battery level decreasing.
I didn’t feel any wobbling or hear sounds and noise like I do sometimes when riding a scooter. Turning and control over the scooter came easy.
The only thing that bothered me was the scooter’s weight – I couldn’t carry it by hand over longer distances, and it happened to have to do that a few times.
Bluetran Lightning vs other scooters
Now let’s see how the Bluetran Lightning stacks up against other scooters in its performance category.
Bluetran Lightning vs Dualtron Victor
The Bluetran Lightning provides high-performance features such as fully hydraulic brakes, an integrated footrest with a brake light, extensive range options, a dedicated headlight, and MiniMotors’ signature lighting.
The scooter offers adjustable suspension, height, and a comfortable ride.
The Dualtron Victor features a fourth-generation frame, wide 3-inch tires, hydraulic Zoom brakes, and smart motor controllers, delivering a powerful 4,000 watts from dual BLDC motors.
Equipped with high-quality LG M50T 21700 series battery cells, the Victor maintains Dualtron’s reputation as a top-tier electric scooter.
If you’re searching a powerful scooter with great range, swift acceleration and climbing ability, the Bluetran Lightning is probably your best bet.
Bluetran Lightning vs Kaabo Wolf King
Both of these scooters are great for city commuting, but the Bluetran Lightning precedes with a more powerful motor and longer range.
On the other hand, the Kaabo Wolf King has an impressive 45° climbing angle which makes it a great option if you live in a hilly area. This scooter also provides somewhat higher speed than the Bluetran Lightning.
However, if you’re frequently traveling, I would suggest to choose the Bluetran Lightning since it’s lighter than the Kaabo Wolf King and therefore more portable.
Bluetran Lightning vs Segway GT1
The Bluetran Lightning is way more powerful than the Segway GT1, providing longer range, higher speed and climbing angle.
Both of the scooters are ideal for urban environments with a great suspension, offering smooth rides.
However, since the Segway GT1 is heavier, this scooter has a bigger weight capacity limit making it a perfect choice for heavier riders. Consequently, it’s not easily portable.
In this case, I’d go for the Bluetran Lightning, as the extra hundred dollars translate into a significantly more valuable scooter.
Build quality
Primarily, you’ll notice the powerful black design of the scooter complemented by white and yellow accessories over the deck and the footrest.
The illuminated markings on the handlebar and the deck’s side are lit by lead lights, which you can customize according to your preference or mood through the light controller.
The frame and handlebars are aviation grade 6082-T6 aluminum alloy, the shaft is made from SCM440 steel, and plastic covers.
The handlebars are foldable and the scooter has dual clamps for stability.
Overall, I can say that the scooter is build sturdy with minimal shaking even at high speeds.
Features
Next, let’s go through the features this scooter offers.
Tires and wheels
The Bluetran Lightning is equipped with 10-inch inflatable wheels, providing slightly better maneuverability compared to 11-inch wheels on similar-sized scooters.
The tires are tubeless pneumatic, which enhanced the overall performance and ride comfort, while also providing reduced risks of flats.
The wheels are covered with fenders for a greater protection.
Brakes
The Bluetran Lightning has zoom hydraulic disc brakes, along with the electric ABS system.
The hydraulic brakes add to the price of the scooter, but in my opinion, I believe they are well worth the price, as they are much safer and result in an entirely different riding experience.
Suspension
The suspension on the Bluetran Lightning is among the most impressive I’ve experienced on a scooter.
It offers double air shock absorbers with a spring at the front and rear. The scooter has four shock absorbers integrated directly between the suspension.
Additionally, you can easily adjust it to your preference.
This kind of suspension helps maintain tire contact with the road, enhancing grip and stability, especially during cornering or on uneven surfaces.
Display and controller
The Bluetran Lightning electric scooter features a Minimotors eye display and controller setup.
The scooter’s handlebars house a typical Minimotors display on the left side, providing essential information about speed, battery level, and riding mode.
The controls are conveniently located, allowing riders to easily switch between modes and manage various functions.
The display was fairly bright even on sunny days.
Lights
The lighting system on the Bluetran Lightning is outstanding.
The inscriptions on the steering rod and the side of the deck are illuminated by lead lights, offering a customizable option based on your preference or mood using the light controller.
Additionally, the scooter features multiple lights, including a main headlight on the steering rod, rear lights in the deck, a dynamic LED strip serving as a brake light, and separate turn indicators for enhanced visibility and safety during rides.
I had no trouble during my nighttime test drive, the scooter remained visible and I felt safe.
Weight and portability
This scooter weighs 88 Ibs / 40 kg – a bit heavy for my taste.
If you live in a building with no elevator I highly suggest choosing a more lightweight and portable scooter rather than this one.
I tried to carry the scooter by hand for a longer distance and it’s not an experience I recommend.
Deck
The Bluetran Lightning offers plenty of room for your feet and provides a comfortable standing surface even for riders with large feet.
Also, the rear of the deck featured a solid footrest that was very useful for resting my rear foot on long rides, and it actually helped me maintain a more natural posture while riding that tired me out less.
Accessories and customizations
The Bluetran Lightning can go pretty fast, so safety is super important. Always wear a good helmet (or a sturdy bike helmet if you’re not going too fast). Check out my guide on the best electric scooter helmets for more info.
For extra safety, think about getting some motorcycle armor or at least knee and elbow pads. See my guide on the best electric scooter accessories for some good options to stay safe and enjoy your rides.
Also, if you intend to leave the scooter outside or find it challenging to bring it home daily due to its weight, it’s essential to get a reliable scooter lock.
Tradeoffs and issues
The Bluetran Lightning comes with a higher price tag, making it a significant investment compared to some other scooters.
If you’re someone who values top-notch performance, the cost might be worth it, but budget-conscious riders could find better value under $2500, $1500 and $1000.
Weighing 88 lbs / 40 kg, the Lightning is on the heavier side for electric scooters, which could be less convenient for smaller riders or those who need to lift it frequently.
Also, the tubeless tires, while resistant to punctures, require special maintenance with sealants and repairs, which might be a bit more hassle for users compared to the traditional tubed tires.
Aside from these, I couldn’t identify additional concerns with this scooter, and in my view, these aren’t significant enough to be considered deal-breakers.
Verdict
The Bluetran Lightning electric scooter stands out as a top choice for riders who prioritize high-performance and extended range.
With a sleek design and powerful specifications, it delivers an exhilarating and stylish riding experience.
It is ideal for riders who enjoy long rides and weekend explorations, since the scooter boasts an impressive LG battery with a massive 72V and 35Ah capacity, offering a remarkable range that surpasses many competitors.
Its robust suspension system and adjustable features contribute to a comfortable and responsive ride.
Overall, if you seek a blend of speed, range, and design excellence, the Bluetran Lightning is an excellent choice.
