When to buy
Commuters and people living in a big city with other transport options will LOVE this scooter, as it’s unbelievably easy to carry around when needed, but also has an unexpectedly big range for commuting. Also, this is a great choice if you’re worried about flats or have experienced them a lot with other air-filled tire scooters.
When not to buy
The ride quality might be the biggest drawback because of the solid tires.
This is a complete review of the Fluid Mosquito electric scooter – let’s see why it’s becoming a favorite choice for city commuters.
Basics
As usual, let’s start with the basics.
Unboxing
The scooter comes folded and nicely packed in a cardboard box, which also includes:
- a charger
- user manual
- tool kit
- the scooter itself
Assembly
There’s a small assembly step that needs to be done before the scooter is ready to ride.
The handlebars come dismounted from the stem bar, in order to fit the scooter into a small box that’s easier to carry.
You will need to attach the handlebars, position them in line with the stem, and tighten them using the screws provided in the box.
Performance
Next, let’s delve into the Mosquito’s performance in more detail.
Speed and speed tests
The official top speed of the Fluid Mosquito is 25 mph / 40 kmh.
During my test ride the scooter reached easily this speed, on a flat terrain.
This is a decent speed considering the fact that the Mosquito is a city cruiser.
However, if you’re a speed enthusiast take a look at my list for fastest electric scooter for something more suitable.
Motor
The acceleration and speed are achieved with the brushless DC motor 500W motor, capable of delivering a peak output of 700W.
The motor is located in the front wheel, which gives this scooter better traction.
Range and range tests
Officially, the Mosquito offers a range up to 22 mi / 35 km.
I was able to reach 19 mi / 31 km, but I rode quite fast, so maybe the scooter is technicaly capable of that range if you ride slower.
Anyway, if you need more range, you’ll probably want to see my guide on the best long-range electric scooters.
Battery and charging
The Mosquito is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 48V 9.6Ah, with approximately 461Wh.
Charging this scooter takes 5-6h with a 2A charger, which makes it easy to power up and ride frequently. You can leave the scooter charging overnight and you’ll have a full battery in the morning.
Waterproof and IP rating
The Fluid Mosquito has an official IP rating of IPX5, meaning you can ride it in rain. Interestingly, there are not that many scooters with an IP rating this high, making this one of the most waterproof electric scooters out there currently.
I was able to test the scooter during wet weather and didn’t notice any damage to it. There was a little slipping and skidding while riding on wet surfaces.
Ride experience
The Mosquito’s 500W brushless DC motor gave the scooter enough power for cruising through the city and effortlessly weaving through traffic. With the motor in the front wheel, I got great acceleration and control, making it super fun to navigate through tight spots.
However, since it’s equipped with 8-inch solid tires, the ride was a little bumpy and less comfortable.
The broad deck provided me with enough space for a stable and comfortable stance.
Weighing around 29 Ibs / 13 kg, the Mosquito is among the lightest electric scooters I’ve tried, making it a breeze to carry when necessary.
And thanks to its quick-folding mechanism, I could easily store and transport it, whether you’re stashing it in your car trunk or taking it on public transportation.
Fluid Mosquito vs other scooters
Now let’s see how the Mosquito compares to other scooters.
Fluid Mosquito vs Apollo Air
The Apollo Air boasts a rugged design suitable for various terrains, equipped with 10-inch air-filled tires and a full suspension system.
Weighing around 39 Ibs / 18 kg, it’s a bit heavier but also provides more sturdiness. The rear hub motor system delivers powerful performance, making it a compelling choice for those seeking an all-terrain electric scooter.
If you prioritize a lightweight and agile scooter for urban commuting, the Mosquito is a solid choice, but if you’re after longer range and more power choose the Apollo Air.
Build quality
Crafted from premium aluminum alloy, the frame of this scooter strikes a harmonious balance between lightness and durability.
The welds on the frame exhibit precision and uniformity, underscoring the scooter’s high manufacturing standards.
Essential components like the handlebars, stem, and brakes are fashioned from robust materials such as steel and aluminum, ensuring long-lasting performance.
The solid tires, contribute to the scooter’s reliability on various terrains.
Features
Next, let’s see the unique features this scooter offers.
Tires and wheels
The Mosquito comes with 8 inch solid tires.
They do result in a more bumpy ride, but on the bright side you won’t get any flats.
The motor is located in the front wheel, offering great traction while riding.
This is not a scooter meant for off-road riding, so if you have that preference check out my list for best off-road electric scooters.
Brakes
The Fluid Mosquito scooter has three braking systems: a back drum brake, a back stomp brake, and a front regen throttle brake.
If you use the regen and drum brakes together, you can stop in about 15 feet when going 15 mph.
The stomp brake is there, but it’s not as easy to use as the brake levers, so most riders might not use it much. It’s there mostly as an emergency brake. I rarely used it myself.
Suspension
The Fluid Mosquito comes with a simple spring suspension system, designed to handle challenges related to solid tires.
The front suspension is positioned at the base of the steering column, and the rear is situated beneath the deck.
While the full suspension effectively handles smaller bumps, some vibrations from uneven roads can be felt quite strongly. This was my major gripe with this scooter.
Controller and display
The scooter comes packed with a simple LCD screen displaying your speed, distance traveled, battery level with five bars, and the outside temperature.
The speedometer is clear in sunlight, but the smaller details are a little hard to see on bright days.
Weight and portability
The Mosquito weighs 29 Ibs / 13 kg, which makes this scooter great for transporting and easy carrying around the city.
In fact, this is one of the lightest electric scooters for adults, and that property will make it useful for many.
Also, the scooter can be folded up quickly, so it’s easy to store. This is great for people who need to put the scooter in their car or take it on buses or trains, especially if they commute.
Accessories and customization
Even though the Mosquito doesn’t offer very high speeds, safety is still important, so always wear a good helmet – check out my guide on the best electric scooter helmets for more info. A half-helmet or even a bike helmet might do the trick.
Also, see my guide on the best electric scooter accessories for some good options to upgrade and customize this scooter. I would recommend stronger lights, a phone mount, and maybe a louder horn or a bell.
Additionally, if you intend to leave the scooter outside keep in mind that the scooter is lightweight and easily portable so it’s essential to get a reliable scooter lock.
Tradeoffs and issues
The Mosquito comes with notable tradeoffs, including a longer braking distance that can impact safety, poor traction on wet tracks posing challenges in adverse weather conditions and a jittery ride quality that may not be suitable for those seeking a smoother riding experience.
Although the suspension effectively smooths larger bumps, this comes at the expense of overall ride comfort, especially on less severe road irregularities.
If you’re an experienced rider you’ll probably require more power, speed and range from your scooter and you won’t get that from the Mosquito.
If you’re thinking about buying this scooter you should carefully think through these issues and see if the Fluid Mosquito is a suitable match.
Verdict
The scooter is perfect for beginners and smaller riders – it is to carry, has a comfy design, not too fast but nice speed and adjustable braking.
Also, it is budget friendly so for a great price you get a good quality commuting scooter.
So, if you prioritize affordability and portability, the Fluid Mosquito is an ideal option.
Finally, I think that beginners and first-time owners will love this model, as it’s affordable, easy to use, very safe, requires almost no maintenance, and is a great way to dive into the world of electric scooters.
