Turboant X7 Pro – best electric scooter with a removable battery overall
The Turboant X7 Pro is probably the best electric scooter with a removable battery overall. The battery is also pretty light in weight and won’t be a problem to carry in a backpack if you buy a spare one.
Previously, a version of this scooter without the attachable battery was available, known simply as just the Turboant X7. It seems that the Pro version was so much more popular, that it completely pushed out the standard version, and is now the only Turboant scooter model available for purchase.
As strange as it may seem, while this scooter is not that popular yet, it seems like it already has a few imitators, which only serve to prove its rising popularity and great value offering.
While the 350 Watt brushless DC hub motor, situated in the front wheel, is at a fairly standard power level for budget scooters, the top speed of 20 mph / 32 kmh is somewhat above the average, and a few owners have reported reaching even higher speeds when the scooter was fully charged.
One of the main advantages of the Turboant X7 Pro is its price. Priced at just $549, the scooter is quite cheaper than most scooters that perform at a similar level, and even better than a few that are not as powerful.
The range of the scooter is 30 mi / 48 km, which is one of the best ranges in scooters priced at around $500. That removable battery sure comes in handy here, and you can effectively double your range by getting a second battery.
There are a few other very interesting, very useful features this scooter has that a lot of other budget scooters lack.
Probably most important of all, the scooter comes with 10-inch pneumatic tires (most budget scooters only have 8.5-inch tires). That makes a really big and notable difference in the ride comfort and safety, effectively making the experience of riding this scooter comparable to the experiences that much more expensive scooters provide.
With an IPX4 water protection standard, dual braking system, a weight limit of 275 lbs / 125 kg, and only weighing 33 lbs / 15 kg, the Turboant X7 Pro is truly a complete package. For just $549, that’s a really good deal in my book. If you’re simply looking for the best value electric scooter with a removable battery, then you will probably want to check out the Turboant X7 Pro review.

Levy Plus – highest quality electric scooter with a removable battery
Arguably one of the most famous scooters with a removable battery, and one of the first models to really bet on this type of innovation, the Levy Plus is one of the most established, highest-quality scooters with this feature.
The Levy brand does not focus too much on performance, but the prices of their scooters fall into the budget price range, and their scooters are very lightweight, portable, and easy to use.
The Levy Plus supports two batteries. Its primary battery is situated in the stem, while the extra battery is attached to the outside of the stem by connecting the battery pack to the stem through the connector pins. Both batteries are easily removable.
Now, keep in mind that there are two Levy models. Besides the Levy Plus, there’s also the standard Levy scooter, and it may even be more popular than the Plus mode. However, I recommend the Levy Plus over the standard Levy in most cases, because the Plus model already comes with the extra battery, and its range of 20 mi / 32 km is a lot more useful than the range of the standard model, which is just 10 mi / 15.5 km. That’s the main difference between the scooters, but also the capacities of the batteries are different as well, and the Levy Plus will simply provide more range and better bang for buck in general.
The scooter has a front-wheel brushless DC hub motor with 350 Watts of power (700 Watts of peak power), that gives the scooter a top speed of 18 mph / 30 kmh. The 36 Volt battery will take 6 hours to charge fully, and you can charge both batteries at the same time, so the charge time will remain the same while you get double the range.
You can choose the tire type when you buy the scooter, and all of the choices are available – inner tubed, tubeless, and fully solid tires. I recommend getting the inner tubed tires in most cases, and maybe considering the tubeless or solid tires if you live in a place where flats might happen easily (poor road conditions, lots of debris on the streets, etc).
Both Levy models are very stable, very reliable, and have a bit of that premium feel to them, even though they are both relatively affordable scooters. With a weight limit of 250 lbs / 113 kg, an IP54 water protection standard, a dedicated app (and a pretty good one, too, which is not really that common), and weighing just 30 lbs / 14 kg without the additional battery, the Levy scooters have everything the urban commuter needs.

Ninebot ES4 – best solid tires electric scooter with a removable battery
The Ninebot ES4 is one of the most famous, best-selling electric scooters to this day. It supports an additional battery upgrade, or, rather, the version of this scooter without the additional battery is simply called the Ninebot ES2.
This is the best scooter with a removable battery that has solid tires that will never suffer flats. If you live somewhere with very poor road conditions, and you suspect that flats might be common, or maybe you have scooterist or cyclist friends complain about lots of flats, then you will want to consider the Ninebot ES4.
This evergreen scooter can go as fast as 18.6 mph / 30 kmh, climb hills as high as 15°, carry 220 lbs / 100 kg on its deck, and has a range of 28 mi / 45 km. With 800 Watts of peak power in the front-wheel brushless hub motor, the scooter is a bit more powerful than most budget models, and while that isn’t exactly reflected in the specs, it’s fairly noticeable in the acceleration and torque the scooter provides.
Besides that, the scooter has an IP54 water protection standard, an electronic brake and a rear foot-operated brake as a backup, and a small spring suspension on the front wheel, all of which make it a pretty complete package.
The level of quality of this scooter is pretty high compared to other scooters in this price category. Ninebot scooters sell a ton of units, and their models are also the main scooters in the fleets of the most popular scooter sharing companies like Lime and Bird. That means they have a really unfair advantage here, in that they can gather a lot of data about the performance of their scooters and a ton of feedback from users, and use all of that to improve their scooters too fast for most competitors to be able to catch up.

Dualtron Storm – best performance electric scooter with a removable battery
The Dualtron Storm is definitely the odd scooter on this list.
Most scooters with removable batteries are typically budget scooters that cost well under $1000, and perform like regular commuters.
That’s not the case with the Dualtron Storm, which costs around $4500 and is a true monster of a scooter that happens to have a removable battery.
The way the scooter looks, especially its stem and the parts supporting it, is not only elegant and futuristic, but very functional as well. It provides the stem with a lot of stability and sturdiness, which results in the entire scooter being more reliable and safer to ride, but even more importantly, less prone to any defects caused by excessive vibration, which can be anything from mechanical to battery defects.
With a range of 80 mi / 129 km, the Dualtron Storm is one of the longest-range scooters out there today. If you’re after a scooter with a removable battery that can give you the most range possible, then the Dualtron Storm will probably be your first choice.
The top speed of 59 mph / 95 kmh, and the 6640 Watt hub BLDC motors, clearly set the Dualtron Storm apart from the other scooters with removable batteries.
The scooter weighs 102 lbs / 46.2 kg, which is not even that heavy considering the scooter’s insane performance (other power scooters easily weigh 30 lbs / 14 kg more while having weaker performance). The scooter can carry 330 lbs / 150 kg on its deck, and also has dual arm suspension on both wheels, as well 160 mm hydraulic disk brakes.
So, if you’re after a scooter with a removable battery that is also ridiculously powerful, the Dualtron Storm will be your choice. You can check out my detailed Dualtron Storm review to find out more.

Swagtron Swagger 7T – best budget electric scooter with a removable battery
The Swagtron Swagger 7T is the cheapest electric scooter with a removable battery you can find today.
Swagtron is well-known as a brand that manufactures budget scooters, so if you’re looking to save as much money as possible on your scooter, they are the go-to brand.
The Swagger 7T in particular is actually one of their most expensive scooters, and it still only costs $449. That’s as low as a scooter with a removable battery can go.
The scooter performs a bit better than what you might expect from a $449 scooter. With a range of 18 mi / 29 km (closer to 20 mi / 32 km for lighter riders), and weighing just 31 lbs / 14 kg, the Swagger 7T will satisfy the needs of most urban commuters. Plus, if you buy a spare battery, you can effectively double your range by carrying the extra one with you and switching them when one runs out. The removable battery is attached to the stem, but it’s the only battery that the scooter can support, and there’s no room for an extra battery. It takes 6 hours to get charged fully.
The Swagger 7T has the most powerful motor out of all the scooters in the Swagtron line. The front hub BLDC motor provides 350 Watts of power, enabling top speeds of up to 19 mph / 30.5 kmh, and a weight limit of 220 lbs / 100 kg.
You will never encounter flats with this scooter, as the fully solid honeycomb tires are immune to that. Also, the tires are 10 inches in diameter, which makes the rides a lot more comfortable than usual (most budget scooters only have 8.5-inch tires).
Essentially, the Swagtron Swagger 7T is the most budget-friendly scooter with a removable battery, and is also a portable, lightweight option that will be a good fit for many commuters and casual riders.

Hiboy S2R – best alternative electric scooter with a removable battery
If you’re looking for a scooter with a removable battery, and you already went through all of the choices above and you still couldn’t find your perfect scooter, you might want to take one final look at the Hiboy S2R.
This wildcard scooter is in many ways similar to the celebrated Hiboy S2, but it also has some very important differences.
Of course, the most notable difference is the removable battery (that is what the “R” stands for in the S2R). While performance is comparable to the other Hiboy scooters, the battery will not have the power regeneration feature, but the upsides will be independent charging, and, of course, unlimited range in theory (if you have 3 batteries, you have 3 times the range, for example).
Another difference is that the scooter doesn’t have any additional suspension besides what the 8.5-inch honeycomb tires provide.
The 350-Watt motor is the same as in the regular Hiboy S2, and the top speed of 19 mph / 30.5 kmh is comparable. The range of 17 mi / 27 km is identical in both scooters, as well as the weight of 30 lbs / 14 kg and the weight limit of 220 lbs / 100 kg.
The Hiboy S2R doesn’t really have a strong point or a remarkable feature that makes it stand out. It is a well-rounded scooter, coming from a brand that’s getting more and more popular by the day, and that’s why I recommend it as a balanced model for those of you that didn’t find the previous more specialized scooters alluring.

Anyhill UM 2 – electric scooter with a removable battery alternative
If you’ve gone through all of the scooters on this list and none of them has caught your eye (not even the Hiboy S2R), then you may want to take a look at the Anyhill UM2. It is pretty much a complete package scooter at a great price and comes with very good quality.
This is a somewhat newer scooter that has proven to be quite a great model with a removable LG battery of the topmost quality.
A single battery charge provides 28 mi / 45 km of range, and since the battery weighs just about 5 lbs / 2 kg, it’s easy to pack a spare one in your backpack and effectively double the range of your scooter.
The top speed of the Anyhill UM 2 is 19 mph / 31 kmh, powered by a rear hub BLDC motor with 450 Watts of real power and 750 Watts of peak power. The scooter can climb hills of 11 degrees, probably a bit higher.
The 10-inch pneumatic tires will provide a pretty comfortable ride, while the combined brake configuration of a front drum and rear electronic brake will make sure your rides are safe.
All in all, a pretty versatile scooter at an affordable price. I recommend it as a wildcard option in this case – if you didn’t find any of the other scooters with removable battery appealing, give this one a shot.

Types of removable batteries in electric scooters
The phrase “removable battery” can mean two things when it comes to electric scooters.
Primarily, it means that the battery of the scooter can be removed from the scooter itself.
But also, it can mean that the scooter can support an extra battery pack (usually attached to the stem) to prolong its range, which is also removable. The latter is also often called an attachable or detachable battery.
Some scooters just have a removable battery, others have a standard primary battery that can’t be removed but can support an additional battery pack as an upgrade, and finally, a smaller number of models have both a removable primary battery and can support an additional removable battery.
Pros of electric scooters with removable batteries
The biggest advantage of electric scooters with removable batteries is that you can practically increase the range of the scooter severalfold. In fact, you can increase it by a factor of whatever number of extra batteries you buy. If you have, for example, 3 separate batteries, you can change all of them, put one in the scooter and two in a backpack with you, and simply replace them as they get depleted.
Another important advantage is that you don’t have to carry the entire scooter inside to recharge it. You simply take the battery with you, lock your scooter outside, charge the battery, and attach it again when you go for the next ride. We can easily make an argument that in many cases, the portability of the scooter becomes almost irrelevant – you simply may never have to carry your scooter inside, for example.
Scooters with removable batteries are also not good targets for thieves. Stealing a scooter without a battery is just not worth their while. Now, they might not know the scooter is lacking the battery at the moment they’re stealing it, and you should still get a strong scooter lock anyways, but if they know the model, they might think twice and change their mind.
Finally, for the scooters that support a second battery, the primary improvement will be in the range of the scooter, but the overall performance will be improved as well. Speed, climbing power, and weight capacity may all increase if you add the additional battery.
Cons of electric scooters with removable batteries
There are not that many downsides to electric scooters with removable batteries really.
We might make an argument that the removable battery adds extra weight to the scooter, but that’s just how things work with batteries in electronic gadgets in general – the more battery life you want, the more weight you have to accept.
Also, there’s the possibility of a greater risk of defects because of the removability feature, as being able to remove the battery adds another moving part to the scooter. Luckily, defects related to extra batteries are super rare (I could only find out about one of them).
How much does an extra battery for an electric scooter cost?
The cost of an additional battery for your electric scooter will vary based on the scooter model, the battery manufacturer, and the battery size. The price can range from $99 all the way up to $300.
How much does an extra battery for an electric scooter weigh?
An extra battery will add between 3 lbs / 1.5 kg and 6.5 lbs / 3 kg of weight to your scooter, depending on its size and capacity. Some of that weight will be from the extra battery rack itself, and the battery without the rack will be about 1 lbs / 0.5 kg lighter than the full setup for the extra battery.
Should you get an electric scooter with a removable battery?
I consider both the ability for a scooter to have a removable battery, and being able to support an additional battery, to be very strong advantages. If your choice is between scooter A, which is a regular scooter, or scooter B, which is the same scooter but with a removable battery, go with scooter A. Also, if you’re choosing between scooter A, which is a regular scooter, and scooter B, which is the same scooter with the option to support an extra battery, always choose scooter A.
That said, keep in mind that most scooters with removable batteries are not true long range scooters. If you truly need a lot of range from your scooter, simply go with some of the best long range electric scooters from the get-go.
