The most important factor to keep in mind when buying an electric scooter for a kid is its height and weight, especially its height. Additionally, you must keep in mind the kid’s age, and other related factors such as whether the kid has reached a growth spurt yet, how fast is it growing, etc.
Electric scooters for kids are typically categorized by age, and the average kid’s height and weight are taken into account when designing these models.
You will find that most electric scooters for kids fall into one of the several age brackets:
- for kids ages 7 and younger (typically not younger than 4, as kids that young may not be ready for an electric scooter)
- for kids between ages 8 and 11, or before the first major growth spurt of the kid
- for kids between ages 12 and 15, or after the first major growth spurt
- for teenagers ages 16 and up
For the last category, the teenagers that are already 16 or older may have already reached their adult height, or are very close to it and will reach it very soon, which is why I recommend getting them a regular adult scooter.
One smaller but possibly important factor to consider here is the child’s character. If the kid you’re buying the scooter for tends to be more dynamic or rowdy, then I would recommend getting that child a safer scooter, which means a slower scooter with stronger brakes and better build quality. Kids like that tend to get injured more often, and a safer scooter will make sure they either avoid or mitigate the potential injuries.
On the other hand, even if the child you’re buying the scooter for is on the calmer side, you may still believe that a safer scooter may better suit them. Typically, scooters for children will be either more on the fun side, or more on the safe side, and you’ll have to use your own judgement in the end here, but I believe that rowdier kids may benefit more from a safer scooter.

You can still end up spending several hundreds of dollars even on a kid’s scooter, but you may also spend even less than a hundred in some cases (which is why electric scooters are great as gifts, too).

Best electric scooter for kids ages 7 and younger – Ninebot Zing E8
There are not that many electric scooters for kids aged 7 or below. Most of the options are actually regular kick scooters, and a lot of the electric scooters are really not any good.
Ninebot saw an opportunity here, and they used their brand name and their unrivaled infrastructure to design and release an electric scooter meant for the youngest of riders. It seemed like children around the world were eagerly waiting for a model like this to come out, since the Ninebot Zing E8 became an almost instant hit.
Today, after a few years on the market, the Ninebot Zing is clearly the best electric scooter for kids aged between 6 and 12, it has sold possibly a few hundred thousand units worldwide, and it has thousands of starling reviews, both online and word of mouth. Given its recommended rider height (3’9” – 4’9” / 115 – 145 cm) and its weight limit (110 lbs / 50 kg), however, it is often bought for children that are younger and haven’t hit any of their major growth spurts yet.
Ninebot, or Segway Ninebot, is one of the best brands for electric scooters in the world ever, so you can rest assured that the build quality of the scooter will be excellent, and the child riding this scooter will have heaps of fun while staying safe at all times.
The scooter can reach top speeds of up to 8.6 mph / 14 kmh, which makes it a well-balanced scooter in terms of safety and performance. Younger kids should probably never be able to go faster than that, so this scooter will be pretty safe even for the youngest children while also being very exciting for them as well. Unlike most other children’s scooters, the Ninebot Zing E8 has 3 different speed modes, that make it possible to control the top speed further.
Interestingly, the rear hub BLDC motor of the scooter has 130 Watts of real power, and 200 Watts of peak power, which is quite a lot for a kid’s scooter. The scooter accelerates through a thumb throttle, but it also has cruise control and will gain speed if you kick off the ground as well. The top speed is limited to a pretty safe point, but the scooter is decently powered anyway, so it will climb milder inclines well.

GoTrax is known for making some of the best budget electric scooters in the world. It’s no wonder that they’ve really driven the price down for electric scooters for the youngest children, as their GoTrax GKS model costs just $129.
That’s almost half the price of the Ninebot Zing E8, and the best part is that the levels of quality will be comparable. Sure, Ninebot are a bit more premium brand, and the Zing E8 will outcompete the GoTrax GKS in some regards, but in many parameters, the scooters will be identical, and the GoTrax GKS will even be better than the Zing E8 in certain aspects, which makes the GoTrax GKS the clear value choice.
The recommended rider age for the GoTrax GKS is also 6 to 12 years, but unlike the Zing E8, the scooter’s recommended rider height is a bit higher, with a maximum rider height of 5′ / 152 cm, and its weight limit of 154 lbs / 70 kg is also quite higher, which means that children will be able to ride this scooter for a lot more time. Many owners report that their children are riding this scooter for several years before outgrowing it without any problems. The scooter will also be great for younger children who are on the bigger side.
The scooter is made out of aluminum and aircraft-grade metal, with a V0 fire retardant deck. Every unit undergoes a thorough quality control inspection, so build quality is very good, although not as good as the one of the Zing E8, and that’s the biggest reason why the scooter is that much cheaper.
The top speed of the scooter is 7.5 mph / 12 kmh, which makes it a bit safer than the Zing E8, but also a bit less fun. The scooter has just one brake on the rear wheel, activated by pressing the foot on the rear fender, and that, in my opinion, is this scooter’s biggest weakness. Now, the low top speed and power don’t really require powerful or redundant brakes, but a fender brake is the least reliable type of brake in my opinion, and it would be a lot better if the scooter had an additional braking system. The lithium battery of the GoTrax GKS has 50.4 Wh of capacity, and a voltage of 25.2 V, giving the scooter a range of 4 mi / 6.4 km. This is probably the second biggest weakness of the scooter, as that range is really small even for small children, and the total ride time of the scooter will typically be 30 minutes or less.
The scooter doesn’t fold. Luckily, it has very small dimensions and weighs just 18.7 lbs / 8.5 kg, so carrying it will not be too big of an issue.
As you can see, the GoTrax GKS is a very solid budget option, but it will have a bit less power, less ride time, and fewer brakes as a result of its lower price. There are still plenty of scenarios where the GoTrax GKS is an excellent choice, including getting it for a more responsible child, or as a cheaper gift for a child.

Safest electric scooter for kids ages 7 and younger – Swagtron SK1

Swagtron is another well-known brand that manufactures primarily budget-friendly electric scooters, and a key advantage they also have in the children’s scooter market is that they specialize in these models. There are a few budget brands out there, but Swagtron is the only one that sits right at the intersection of being both a budget brand and a children’s brand.
Priced at just $89, the Swagtron SK1 is the cheapest electric scooter for younger children. However, I don’t recommend it as the best budget option (see the GoTrax GKS above for that, it’s just a few bucks more and it’s better in many important aspects).
The Swagtron SK3 is the best choice if you’re looking for the safest possible electric scooter for children ages 7 or younger.
There are several reasons for that, the most important one being its top speed. The scooter is capable of only going 6.2 mph / 10 kmh, and at those kinds of speeds, serious injuries are not very likely even for younger children.
Additionally, the scooter doesn’t have a hand-operated acceleration system, and the only way to engage the motor is to ride it by kicking off the ground and developing a speed of 3 mph / 4.8 kmh, after which the automatic acceleration system kicks in and boosts the speed to the maximum top speed available.
The scooter uses the typical rear-fender foot brake found in many children’s scooters, and while a hand-operated brake would be great, I don’t think there’s a need for it when the scooter can only go as fast as it can.
The scooter is meant for kids between ages 5 and 9, and it’s actually the electric scooter with the youngest recommended rider age in the world. It has a weight limit of 143 lbs / 65 kg, and the maximum handlebar height is just 33 in / 84 cm. The handlebar height is adjustable as well, making this scooter ideal for the youngest riders out there.
One surprising thing about this scooter is its build quality. While Swagtron produces good scooters for the prices they charge, many of their models, especially the models for adults, are not known for the best engineering and execution, and build quality is infamously low even for some of their most popular models. Luckily, the Swagtron SK1 is an exception here, and the simple design of the scooter doesn’t seem to cause any problems down the road. The scooter sells really well, its owners are very satisfied, and while there’s not too much complexity in this scooter for a lot to go wrong, it’s truly great that almost always nothing actually goes wrong.
While the low top speed can be seen as a feature rather than a bug, it’s harder to find a positive thing about the range being low. Sure, the weight of the scooter will be lower, but with a range of just 4.35 mi / 7 km, and a ride time of around 45 minutes, the scooter isn’t terribly fun. It will be good enough for the youngest of children, but they may quickly get bored of it because of its mediocre performance.
Now, the weight of the scooter is just 8 lbs / 3.6 kg, which makes it one of the lightest electric scooters for children in the world. The dimensions are also very small, and while the scooter doesn’t fold, it’s still pretty portable nonetheless.
The tires are from solid rubber, and have a diameter of 4 inches, which makes this scooter unsuitable for almost anything but the smoothest surfaces.
But, again, if you’re buying an electric scooter for a younger child that may be prone to getting into accidents or suffering injuries, then a safe scooter is the way to go, and the low speed and acceleration features of the Swagtron SK1 make it the safest scooter for children ages 7 or younger.

Razor is arguably the best brand for electric scooters for children, and the Razor E100 is their flagship scooter. It is possible this scooter has sold several million units at this point, it has been battle-tested by millions of children worldwide, the ratings and the reviews are nothing short of spectacular, and it feels like there’s nothing else left to prove – the Razor E100 is the best electric scooter for kids ages 8 and up.
This model has been around for almost two decades now, and it has seen a lot of iterations, upgrades, and improvements over those years. Today, the result is a strong, durable electric scooter for pre-teens with an unmatched build quality and a very long lifespan. Unlike most other electric scooters which are primarily made from aluminum, the Razor E100 is made from steel alloy, which gives it a lot of strength, toughness, and reliability.
The recommended rider age for this scooter is 8+. With a weight limit of 120 lbs / 54 kg, and a handlebar height of just 55 cm, the scooter will be suitable for pretty much all pre-teens.

Another feature that’s not very common today and is mostly found in Razor scooters is using a sealed lead acid battery instead of a lithium-ion one. This is probably just a case of Razor not changing a winning team – lithium batteries are superior in almost every aspect, but the Razor E100 still works perfectly with a sealed lead acid battery, so why risk and try to change a tried-and-tested configuration?

The Pulse Performance is meant for children ages 8 and up, and it costs just $89! The scooter is pretty good (obviously not the best, but pretty good nonetheless), and given its features and specs, it is the best budget option for children between the ages of 8 and 11 years.
This scooter comes from a well-established brand for children’s electronics and toys, and their Pulse Performance scooter is their best known product. The brand is not as popular as some of the other brands here and probably doesn’t sell as many units, but it still has good reviews in its online listings.
Now, for $89, you can’t really expect a lot, and you would probably not be too surprised no matter how bad of a scooter you get. And yet, somehow, the performance and the quality of the scooter clearly outperform the price in a manner that’s almost unbelievable.
I mean, for just $89, you get a fully-fledged children’s electric scooter. It doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles, but it sure does come with a lot more than what you would expect for the price.
With a top speed of 8 mph / 12.9 kmh, the scooter is ideal for pre-teen children. The scooter features a standard thumb-throttle acceleration system, there are no buttons on the deck or the motor automatically accelerating once the scooter reaches a certain speed due to kick-riding. The motor has 80 Watts of power, which is actually pretty low compared to the motors of other scooters, and yet the scooter is faster than a lot of other children’s scooters. The motor uses a chain-drive system, which is a technology that’s not commonly found in modern scooters today, but is still somewhat common in children’s scooters.
The weight limit of the scooter is 120 lbs / 54.4 kg, and the handlebar height is 35 in / 89 cm, which are ideal for the age bracket of the scooter.
The build quality of the scooter is pretty strong, as the scooter is made out of not just aluminum, but some heavy-duty steel as well. Safest electric scooter for kids ages 8 to 11 – Ninebot Zing E10
As part of the initiative to capture the children’s scooter market, Ninebot released several models in their Zing line. The Ninebot Zing E8, described above, is arguably the best electric scooter for children ages 7 and below, but the Zing line features a few other excellent scooters meant for different age ranges as well.
The Ninebot Zing E10 is a scooter from the same line meant for children ages 8 to 14, at least according to the official specs. Personally, I find that age bracket to be pretty wide, and while I do think that the Zing E10 is great for the first half of that age range, I believe there are some better options for the second one (described below).
Still, when it comes to children between the ages of 8 and 11 years, the Ninebot Zing E10 is one of the best options out there, and certainly the safest one. The recommended rider height is between 51 and 63 in / 130 and 160 cm, and the weight limit is 132 lbs / 60 kg.
The triple braking system, comprised of a regenerative electronic brake, a hand-operated one, and a redundant rear fender brake engaged with the foot, are the main features that make this scooter super-safe.
Additionally, the superb engineering and the masterful execution result in a great build quality, that further enhances the safety of this scooter. The scooter has a slick, robust design, with no unnecessary features, made with a special type of aluminum that is both tough and light. The scooter has an IPX4 ingress protection rating as icing on the cake.
The scooter can go as fast as 10 mph / 16 kmh, and the scooter has 3 speed modes to further limit the top speed to an even safer one. The rear hub motor has a real power level of 150 Watts, and a peak power level of 200 Watts.
I believe that the only weak point of this scooter is its range. With just 6.2 mi / 10 km of range on a single battery charge, and less than 40 minutes of ride time, the scooter doesn’t have as much range as most of its owners would like. Also, I believe that this is the main factor that makes the scooter not suitable for children ages 12 or more. The battery itself is quite good, 21.6 Volts, a smart battery management system, a modern setup overall, but still it seems that it’s too small in capacity, so the range is poor as a result.
The scooter folds at the stem, and doesn’t really take up much space when folded. Also, the scooter weighs just 17.8 lbs / 8.1 kg (at least the small battery doesn’t add too much weight). All of that means that the scooter is very portable and easily fits everywhere.
One interesting and unique feature of this scooter is its tire setup. Both the tires are from solid rubber, which is nothing unusual, but the tires come in different sizes, with the front one being 7 inches in diameter while the rear one is just 6 inches. The scooter also features a spring shock absorber above the front wheel.
Same as the Zing E8, the Zing 10 is massively popular and it has already proven its worth thousands upon thousands of times. With one of the best braking setups found in children’s scooters, a fairly low top speed, and an excellent build quality, the Ninebot Zing E10 is easily the safest electric scooter for children between the ages of 8 and 11.

Hiboy has been taking the scooter world by storm, releasing one successful scooter model after another for years now. The brand has been especially successful in the budget price range, but they didn’t really have a successful children’s model.
Until the Hiboy S2 Lite came.
With the S2 Lite mode, Hiboy really hit the nail on the head, and today, this is probably the best electric scooter for younger teenagers in the world.
The scooter is slowly but surely gathering positive reviews, building its brand and name recognition, and applying the lessons learned from the constructive criticism of its users into features and improvements in every new release. The scooter hasn’t been around for that long, but it has managed to build a loyal user base, and sell a ton of units while maintaining high ratings in the listings online.
Officially, the age range of the scooter is 12 through 60, although I would probably not recommend this scooter for anyone older than 15, as older teenagers and younger adults may need a more adult scooter. Still, the scooter can easily support riders of up to 180 lbs / 82 kg, and has a height of 42.5 in / 108 cm, so it can truly be used by most adults as well.
One trademark of many Hiboy scooters is their toughness, and this scooter certainly has tons of it. It is made from aluminum, and its build is very strong, so it can easily withstand a lot of punishment and abuse from reckless teenagers.
The Hiboy S2 Lite has a top speed of 13 mph / 20.9 kmh which is probably the perfect top speed for younger teenagers, and it comes with 2 speed modes. The motor is situated in the front wheel for better torque, and it can develop up to 250 Watts of power, enabling the scooter to climb hills of up to 15°.
With a voltage of 36 Volts and a capacity of 210 Watt-hours, the lithium-ion battery of the Hiboy S2 Lite is pretty big for a kid’s scooter, and it gives the scooter a range of 10.6 mi / 17 km.
The scooter folds at the stem, and while its length is still pretty big even when folded, its height becomes very small, and the scooter is not too difficult to fit even in smaller spaces. Also, the scooter weighs just 21 lbs / 9.5 kg, so overall, it’s a pretty portable scooter.
As with most other children’s scooters, the tire diameter of the Hiboy S2 Lite is not terribly big, and the scooter comes with 6.5-inch solid rubber tires. The scooter has no suspension. Braking is pretty good, as the scooter has two braking systems, an electronic one and a rear fender one.

Razor is one of the best brands of electric scooters for kids in the world (if not the best), and it’s no wonder that they will have more than one model on this list.
The Razor E200 is their offering for children ages 13 and up, and while maybe not as good as the Hiboy S2 Lite, it’s still excellent value for money, and probably the best budget choice for younger teenagers.
Same as with the other models from the Razor E series, the E200 is very popular and is owned by either hundreds of thousands, or maybe even millions of children.
The scooter has been around for a long period, and it has improved quite a lot over the years, which is evident from the spectacular ratings on its online listings, and the chatter of parents of young scooterists in online scooter communities. Its build quality has been steadily improving, and it should come as no surprise that today, the scooter has ironed out almost every issue that has been found in the previous versions, resulting in build quality that far exceeds what most expect based on the scooter’s price.
The main build material is steel, which is heavier than the aluminum that’s typically used for electric scooters, but it also gives the scooter a lot more stability and better balance.
The weight limit of the Razor E200 is 154 lbs / 70 kg, while the height of the scooter is 41 in / 104 cm. The scooter’s handlebar height is not adjustable, but that’s because it is usually ideal for the intended rider age.
The top speed of the scooter is 11.8 mph / 19 kmh, which is exactly the right speed for young teenagers to have a bit of fun on this scooter while not being in danger of a serious injury. Also, as with other Razor scooters, the E200 doesn’t fold. Weighing in at 38 lbs / 17 kg, and with its dimensions not being exactly small, the scooter’s portability is minimal, and probably its weakest point.
The scooter comes with pneumatic 8-inch tires, which are a breath of fresh air when compared to the typical solid 6-inch wheels found in most children’s scooters, and the rides with the Razor E200 will be more comfortable. The scooter has a single brake on the rear wheel, but the brake is strong and does its job well.

Kids between the ages of 12 and 15 are not really small children, but they’re far from responsible adults. If the kid in question is a bit on the lively side and you expect her or him to push the limits of the scooter, it is probably a good idea to get them a safer scooter.
And for children between 12 and 15 years of age, the RND F14 is the safest scooter out there.
RND is not a very well-known brand, but they do have a few models that are solid value for money. The RND F14 is one of their most popular scooters. This is a budget scooter without a doubt, but its quality level is not terrible. Its aerospace-grade aluminum build and decent finishing will provide a generally good experience and safe rides.

Many teenagers in their late teens will already have reached their full adult height. The ones that haven’t, will be well on their way, and will probably get there very soon. I simply don’t see the point in buying children’s scooters for teenagers in their late teens – a far better option is to get them an adult scooter with an average handlebar height.
Now, I do recommend getting teenagers aged 16 and up an adult scooter, but not just any scooter. Besides an average or adjustable handlebar height, I recommend buying a scooter that’s also very tough and reliable, as teenagers are not known to care too much for their items most of the time and may easily break them. For that same reason, I also don’t recommend buying a super-expensive scooter.
And when it comes to adult scooters with average handlebar heights that are also very tough and don’t break the band, the Hiboy Max3 is the best option.

Again, when we’re talking about scooters for teenagers ages 16 and above, it’s much better to look at adult scooters with adjustable handlebar heights. Out of all of those options, the best budget pick has to be the Voyager Ion.
Now, unlike the Glion Dolly, which is a full-blown adult scooter that happens to be ideal for teenagers, the Voyager Ion is probably somewhat closer to a teenage scooter that adults can sometimes ride as well. Voyager is a brand that sells many different rideables, a lot of them for kids, but a few of their scooters lie somewhere in between, and the Voyager Ion is one such scooter.
The scooter is actually not that well known, but it’s still very useful, and the people that own it describe it as fun and useful.
The strongest point of the Voyager Ion is its price. Priced at just $189, this is the cheapest electric scooter for adults, or rather, the cheapest electric scooter that may not be necessarily an adult scooter but is still suitable for a lot of adults.
Technically, the recommended rider age for this scooter is unknown, but judging from its specs, it’s almost obvious that the scooter is meant for older children and teenagers in their later teen years. It has a weight limit of 220 lbs / 100 kg, and a maximum handlebar height of 33 in / 84 cm, but the handlebar height can be adjusted to fit much shorter riders, which means the scooter is perfect for children that may hit a growth spurt very soon as well.
Now, this is clearly a budget scooter, but the surprising thing about it is that its build quality is not terrible. In fact, far from it – this is actually quite a tough and durable scooter, especially when we keep in mind its price tag. In fact, with an IP55 water protection rating (one of the best in the game actually), an aluminum alloy as the main build material, and lacking almost no features, we can easily say this is a great little cheap scooter.
The top speed of 12.5 mph / 20 kmh is fairly safe for teenagers, and the 250 Watt motor is decently powered but not too crazy. The official climb angle of this scooter is 15°, and the scooter has stronger torque and acceleration than you might expect, so it’s certainly a fun ride.
Probably the worst thing about the Voyager Ion is its range. The battery has 24 Volts but just 120 Watt-hours of capacity, and the range is limited to just 7 mi / 11.3 km. That may be enough for some teenagers, although young adults, especially ones that may need their scooters for commuting, will probably want to see some true long-range electric scooters.
Since the battery is not too big, the scooter’s weight will remain very manageable, and with just 18 lbs / 8.16 kg in weight, the scooter is very easy to carry around. The scooter folds at the stem, and its folded dimensions are small to moderate.
With solid rubber 6-inch tires and no additional suspension, the rides will not be super comfortable, but given the scooter’s overall build quality, they will still be decent. The scooter has two braking systems for redundancy.
